At the Pauli Murray Center, we are dedicated to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment for all visitors. While we recognize that there is always room for improvement, we are actively working to enhance our programs and services as we explore our first year as a visitor-ready center. It is our goal to be transparent about the assets and limitations of our space, and work towards providing additional accessibility as we are able.
Parking and Directions
The Pauli Murray Center is located at 906 Carroll Street in Durham, NC. in the West End. The entrance to the building is located on the right side of the home, near the Handicap Parking placard.
One handicap parking space is available on the paved portion of our driveway, next to our main entrance.
Four parking spaces are available in the grassy area in front of the home. Free street parking is also available along Carroll Street. We ask that folks try to fill up the grass parking first, out of respect for our neighbors.
The 10 and 10B bus routes stop approximately 500 feet from the Pauli Murray Center. Please be aware that while Carroll Street is paved, it does not have a sidewalk, so visitors may need to navigate the street directly.
Building Accommodations
The Pauli Murray Center is currently only open for pre-scheduled events. We do not have drop in hours or standard business hours. Some events require advanced registration and some do not. Please see the details of individual events for reservation requirements.
The outdoor exhibits are available to all visitors and open without a reservation sunrise to sunset each day. Please note that the area around the outdoor exhibits in unpaved, grassy terrain.
As a small space, the Pauli Murray Center has one large family sized, handicap-accessible restroom. The restroom is also equipped with a baby changing station.
Visitors with Limited Mobility
The main entrance to the Pauli Murray Center, located on the right side of the home, is equipped with a ramp and directly next to the handicap parking space. We do not have automatic doors at this time.
When parking in the general parking lot, be aware of uneven ground. The general parking lot is located in a grassy area and while the handicapped space and part of the driveway are paved, the first portion of the driveway is made of gravel.
All exhibits inside are located on the first floor of this historic home. The upstairs is not open to the public. Seating is also available throughout the space.
The Pauli Murray Center is in the process of conducting an audit of our space for wheelchair users.

Trained service animals are always welcome at the Pauli Murray Center.

Economic Accessibility
While some opportunities with the Pauli Murray Center are offered to the community at no charge, others require a fee to participate. However, nearly all paid events offer ‘pay-what-you-can’ tickets for folks with financial need. To view this option, go to our ticketshop and click ‘Book Now’ next to the event you’d like to attend. Select the “Ticket for WIC/EBT Card Holder or those with financial need (pay what you can)” ticket option and write in the amount you are able to contribute. The minimum donation requested for paid events is $2. This discounted option is available to all members of our community without any income verification requirement.
